stains are inevitable due to our consumption of a variety of foods and drinks
including soda, coffee, wine, teas, etc. Teeth whitening is helpful to return
teeth to their lightest shade and can be done either in-office or with take-home
trays and gel.
With take-home tray whitening an impression is taken and a custom tray is fabricated. At a second visit a supply of whitening gel is given to the patient and he/she wears the tray for about 1 hour 3-5 times a week (techniques differ) for a period of time until an acceptable result is achieved. Take-home gel is also helpful to maintain the shade achieved during in-office whitening.
In-office whitening is the quickest and most efficient means of whitening. At Infinity Dental we use a technique called Boost-Whitening. Opalescence Boost is a chemically activated power whitening gel that provides brighter, whiter teeth after just 40 minutes in the dental chair. The powerful 40% hydrogen peroxide gel is chemically activated, so it doesn’t require a hot, uncomfortable light to work. The formula is activated just prior to application, ensuring every dose of is fresh and effective. The doctor/assistants will place the solution in 20 minute increments, it is then rinsed off and another layer placed until the patient reaches their desired shade. Often the in-office method will include take-home trays in order to maintain the final shade.
Whitening in either form will often cause sensitivity which will vary from patient to patient so it is recommended that fluoride products (mouth rinse/toothpaste) are used in conjunction.
